Fishing Truckee 1/30/2010 - Submitted by Paul Hamill

I got a good tip from Truckee Fishing Guide Matt “Gilligan” Koles - check his website for updated Truckee River Fishing Reports at www.gilligansguideservice.com. Fishing the Truckee River in the winter can be tricky - hit or miss. But last Sunday 1/30/2010 was one of the hit days. The sun was shining for the first time in several weeks. Air temperature was in the mid 40’s. I fished below Boca for about 2.5 hours. I landed 2 very nice rainbow trout, both just over 20 inches. I also hooked and landed a nice whitefish. Some fisherman may call that an oxymoron - nice & whitefish - but whitefish can put up a pretty good fight. But hey they are pretty ugly. Try fishing super small 18 - 20 size nymphs. PT, Zebra Midge, orange egg pattern or a San Juan Worm. The water is cold and the trout won’t move far the take your fly, so be sure to work every inch of the hole before moving on. Also the fish don’t want to work that hard in the cold water so look for slower, deeper pools and runs and be sure to work the edges and seams. Good Luck. And here are a few more images from that day fly fishing on the Truckee River.
